Cooks Democrats confirmed winners on Mitiaro

The Cook Islands Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by the Cook Islands Party over the Mitiaro by-election result.

The initial tied result was overturned in December, giving the seat to the Democratic Party's Tangata Vavia over the Cook Islands Party's Tuakeu Tangatapoto.

Now an appeal from the Cook Islands Party that another voter should have been excluded on the grounds they were out of the country seeking medical help has been turned down.

The Cook Islands News reports Mr Vavia saying he is sure both parties and the people of Mitiaro would be happy the issue is now resolved.

He has called for the Electoral Act to be reviewed to ensure these issues of voter qualification do not come up again.
