It's expected that New Zealand Police Superintendent Steve Caldwell is to become Tonga's new Police Commissioner before the end of the month.

Matangi Tonga reports that the Minister of Police, Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa, confirmed that King Tupou VI had given his royal assent to his appointment.

A Judicial Panel recommended Superintendent Steve Caldwell for the job during his visit to Tonga late last month.

Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa says Superintendent Caldwell comes to Tonga after two years as Contingent Leader for the New Zealand Police in Bougainville.

Steve Caldwell replaces fellow New Zealander, Grant O'Fee, who retired in December after two and a half years of service.

Viliami 'Unga Fa'aoa is currently Tonga's Acting Police Commissioner.
