The Papua New Guinea Hunters have thrashed Souths Logan Magpies 40-18 to get their

Queensland Cup rugby league season off to the perfect start.

A mix up at the back between new fullback Stargroth Amean and Edward Goma saw the Hunters down 6-0 inside five minutes but the visitors, featuring eight debutants, bounced back quickly with a try to Adam Korave.

The Magpies regained the lead midway through the half before Amean redeemed himself with a try on debut to level the scores at 12-all.

With the Hunters on the front-foot a further two tries gave PNG a 22-12 halftime lead.

A further three touchdowns in the second half, including a long-range effort from skipper Israel Eliab, sealed a dominant performance.

Head Coach Michael Marum was happy with the performance but says there is plenty of room for improvement.

He says the team must improve on ball possession and the basics to be able to compete with the best teams in the competition.
