Fears for crew of fishing vessel near Marshalls

Monstrous waves kicked up by tropical storm Bavi may have sunk a longline fishing vessel that has been missing since last Thursday in the Marshall Islands.

The vessel, Clear Water 02 with nine crew aboard, was feared lost when debris from the vessel was sighted on Monday south of Ailinglaplap Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

Marshall Islands Fishing Venture spokesman Neil Milne said the company was not giving up hope, and seven of its fishing boats are continuing to search the area where the boat is believed to have last been.

Mr Milne said word has been passed to residents of far-flung atolls in the vicinity to be on the lookout for survivors who may be drifting in a northwesterly direction.

The U.S. Coast Guard has also been searching for the 82 vessel by air.
