Nauru govt says latest stone throwing claims wrong

12:27 pm on 18 March 2015

The Nauru government has dismissed claims two refugees were badly hurt by stone throwing locals, saying their speeding motorcycle crashed.

In a statement the government says the two Iranians may have been under the influence of alcohol.

It says organisations like the Refugee Action Coalition are trying to trash Nauru's name.

The Coalition's Ian Rintoul reported on Tuesday the married couple were riding a motorcycle late on Monday night when they were hit by a shower of rocks thrown by Nauruans.

But the government says this is a complete fabrication, the couple were speeding and that police have Nauruan witness statements that there was no stone throwing.
