Hundreds of expired goods seized in Tonga

7:51 am on 30 March 2015

The Director of Consumer Affairs in Tonga says hundreds of products have been taken off the shelves from stores in the Kingdom because they are past their expiry date or not fit for consumption.

Sandra Fifita says 67 staff from various agencies are carrying out raids around Tonga in an effort to safeguard the rights of consumers.

Ms Fifita hundreds of goods have been seized from the approximately 60 businesses they have visited.

"With the number of shops that they have inspected and carried out the programme there were times that they'll come in and with the recent one the shuttle that they do the enforcement programme was too small. There's a lot more so they have to actually arrange another truck so they can actually get the goods out from the shelf."
