Fiji asked to extend help to Vanuatu

The government of Fiji says it has received a formal request from the Vanuatu to extend its rehabilitation mission after Cyclone Pam.

FBC News reports the mission of the Fijian military and medical contingent was to have ended yesterday and the team expected to be back in Fiji today.

However, the team is now expected to stay on until a date yet to be determined.

The Fijian Engineering Corps has completed construction on some of the schools on Tanna while the medical team carried out surgeries on Tanna after being asked by the National Disaster Management Organistaion to work there.

New Zealand Navy continues assistance

New Zealand's vessel HMNZS Canterbury has moved to the southern part of the Shepherd Islands to provice assistance.

The Navy says some 70 personnel are still working on Epi and Tongoa Islands, continuing the repair and rebuilding tasks with heavy equipment.

It says in the steeper and rockier islands it has used inflatable boats to move personnel and equipment.
