Papua New Guinea's works secretary says work on critical sections of the Highlands Highway is progressing well now that the military has been engaged to help with engineering and security.

The Post Courier reports that until the military was deployed most of the work on various sections of the highway had been delayed by landowners interfering and trying to claim compensation.

The works secretary, David Wereh, says most of the upgrade work in Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Enga and Southern Highlands provinces have been promptly attended to by works engineers with the assistance of soldiers.

Mr Wereh says the partnership between his department and the defence force will go a long way and should be maintained to ensure services are delivered without delay.
