Scruffy Vanuatu drivers sent home

The first cruise ship to visit Vanuatu since the devastation of Cyclone Pam arrived this morning in Port Vila, but some public transport operators were sent home because their dress was deemed inappropriate.

The government and tourism authorities have been working for some months to improve the behaviour of public transport drivers who descend on the wharf to collect tourist fares.

The government has held a meeting with the drivers and warned it will not tolerate any further disturbances at the wharf.

Today the drivers were required to queue and drivers had been asked to dress suitably.

But our correspondent says police sent some of them home because their dress was not up to standard.
