Philippines on track as PNG top labour source

The Philippines will soon overtake Australia as the main source country of new foreign employees in Papua New Guinea.

PNG Business Advantage reports that the Philippines has recently overtaken the US and Japan to be the second biggest source of foreign workers.

In the latest year for which data is available, 2013, more than 22,000 arrivals in PNG came from the Philippines, a six-fold increase over the previous 15 years.

It represents 41 percent of arrivals from Asia which is fast becoming the most important source region for foreign workers in PNG.

In 2012, the Philippines had the largest percentage of employment-related visitor arrivals to PNG in proportion to overall arrivals with 82 percent, followed by India with 76 percent.

Filippinos represent 24 percent of foreign workers coming in to PNG, with Australians at 36 percent.
