Fiji elections office welcomes observer report

2:17 pm on 16 April 2015

Fiji's Elections Office says it will carefully review the final report of the Multinational Observer Group and its recommendations on the 2014 polls as it starts preparations for the 2018 national election.

The Fiji Times reports that the Elections Supervisor Mohammed Saneem has welcomed the report and says it will assist in efforts to achieve international best practices and adopt innovation.

Mr Saneem says the report not only provides feedback on the conduct of the election, but it also makes detailed recommendations for future improvement.

The MOG report recommended changes to an Electoral Decree provision which restricted any group receiving foreign funding from campaigning on issues, organising debates, meetings or publishing information.

It also suggested laws placing restrictions on public gatherings be changed.

Mr Saneem says the office is constantly working to improve preparations and procedures.

He says the MOG's findings that the 2014 election was a credible one, was also welcomed.
