The Pacific Islands Leaders' Meeting takes place in Iwaki next month.

The PALM summit has been held every three years since 1997, but Fiji's previous military-led regime was not invited in 2009 and 2012.

The Fiji Sun reports Mr Bainimarama saying the meeting was significant to Fiji.

The Paper reports Mr Bainimarama also said Fiji does not need to return to the Pacific Islands Forum.

The Forum lifted Fiji's suspension after it held elections last year but Suva is refusing to retake its seat because of disagreement over the membership of Australia and New Zealand.
