Big development changes ahead for Pacific judiciary

Pacific chief justices are contemplating the future growth of the region's judiciary as a five-year development programme draws to a close.

A recent survey by the Pacific Judicial Development Program on its effectiveness shows 85 percent of court workers and two thirds of users say they experienced improvements in performance.

The chair of the programme's executive committee, Samoa's chief justice Patu Sapolu, says while much has been achieved there is still a lot to be done to strengthen and develop the region's courts.

"And given the size of the region, the diversity of the people and the challenges involved and the magnitude of the task, I think we will be working in close consultation on the contents of this new program," he says.
