Fiji villager allegedly beaten by police

1:37 pm on 27 April 2015

Police in Fiji are alleged to have beaten a man in front of his family and fellow villagers on the northern island of Vanua Levu last month.

The Fiji Times reports the whole village watched as Sakiusa Niulala was beaten as lay half naked on the ground at Naibalebale settlement in Viani Bay on the 20th of March.

The paper says the man was wanted in a drug related case.

Fiji's Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald says it is a very serious matter and an official investigation has been launched by the Police Internal Affairs Unit.

In February Mr Groenewald said the investigation into the filmed beating of two men by security personnel in 2013 had been completed and was with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
