Papua New Guinea cricket captain Jack Vare believes the Barramundi's can take the elusive final step and qualify for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Vare was this week announced as the new Barramundi's captain, replacing Chris Amini, who will instead lead the PNG 'A' team at the Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

PNG have come up short twice before in the T20 qualifiers and in 2013 lost a playoff match against Hong Kong in which the winning team advanced to the World Cup proper.

Vare says the team has been in good shape in training over the past three months and are now used to playing on the international stage, so they feel confident about doing well in Ireland and earning a place in India in 2016.
