Two hurt in New Caledonia nickel plant accident

2:21 pm on 1 May 2015

Reports from New Caledonia say two workers have been taken to hospital after an accident at the Vale nickel plant.

The public broadcaster says the two suffered burns when they were hit by acidic steam during maintenance work.

Several agencies have sent officials to the site to investigate whether the accident was due to a malfunction or a procedural error.

In 2010 the Vale nickel plant overhauled some procedures and revised safety rules after a worker was burnt by spurting acid.
