A women's counselling service in the Cook Islands says confidentiality is the key in eliminating domestic violence cases.

The new office manager of Punanga Tauturu Incorporated, Nga Teinangaro, says the centre has three qualified counsellors as well as access to free legal advice for women wanting to talk about their domestic violence experiences, relationship troubles or child welfare issues.

Ms Teinangaro says concerns over confidentiality can be a major problem, but the centre assures all women of the centre's strict processes.

She says the centre is also a safe house for women to flee to in cases of violence in the home.

The PTI centre, located behind the Tupapa Health Clinic in Rarotonga, is gaining more experience on trends of women's issues in the country and Ms Teinangaro says she encourages women to talk about any problems they have.
