A United Nations review on human rights has recommended the Marshall Islands establish a national human rights commission and do more work to address domestic violence.

The review noted there were some achievements since the Marshalls last review in 2010 but it also included a number of recommendations including to prohibit all forms of corporal punishment of children, and to include gender and disability as grounds for non-discrimination in the Constitution

The Acting Regional Head of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Catherine Phuong, says the 43-nation working group that took part in the review also had other concerns.

"Some states expressed concerns for instance on the level of violence and discrimination against women. Quite a number of states also expressed concerns about the still low level of ratification of the main human rights treaties."

Ms Phuong says the Marshall Islands will officially adopt the report on Friday.
