Two thirds of voting stations close in Bougainville

Polling is now completed in 22 constituencies in Bougainville, with the remaining 11 constituencies in the Papua New Guinea region to be completed this week.

The Acting Bougainville Electoral Commissioner, George Manu, says he is heartened to have received positive feedback from people visiting the polling stations.

He thanked the vast majority of Bougainvilleans for working with polling officials, as well as the Bougainville Police Service, for helping make the election, free, safe and fair.

There have been reports of complaints by people regarding the observers' presence at polling stations and claims they were interfering with the election process.

Mr Manu earlier said he will ask police to investigate an incident in Buka where a candidate shut down a polling station.

Last week, the Post Courier reported that a polling official told the newspaper many voters' names were not on the common roll and had been turned away when they came to vote.
