Several suspects are being questioned after Fiji's Police Commissioner was attacked at a Suva restaurant on Thursday night.

FBC News reports Ben Groenewald was having dinner when several assailants wearing balaclavas stormed into the restaurant, which is also a wine shop.

Mr Groenewald then attempted to stop the attackers from robbing the outlet and was hit by one of them.

The group then threw bottles and rocks at him before fleeing by taxi.

The Police Chief of Intelligence and Investigation, Henry Brown, says the suspects are now in custody.

He says Mr Groenewald was only slightly injured in the attack.
