A man who poured petrol on his wife and set her alight has been jailed for 50 years in Papua New Guinea.

The National Court in East Sepik Wewak jailed the 40 year old man for killing his wife after a domestic argument more than six years ago.

The woman suffered burns to 80 percent of her body and died the next day.

Justice Iova Geita described the crime as callous, heinous and painful and said domestic violence appeared to be on the increase despite new laws such as the Family Protection Act

The judge said a long custodial sentence was warranted to deter men from committing such heinous crimes in future.
