Suspended Fiji MP submits apology

The opposition MP who's been suspended from Fiji's parliament has submitted a written apology to the Speaker.

Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu of the Sodelpa party has been suspended from parliament for two years over slurs against the Speaker Jiko Luveni.

FBC News reports Ratu Naiqama has submitted a written apology which has been received by parliament's secretary general.

The apology was recommended by parliament's Privileges Committee which was asked to report on the matter.

The opposition boycotted the legislature on Friday after MPs voted to suspend the member.

The Speaker of Fiji's Parliament, reconvened in 2014 after the 2006 coup. Jiko Luveni is Fiji's first female in the role.
