US able to resume sales of military gear to Fiji

The United States has ended a ban on the sale of military equipment to Fiji.

The Associated Press reports an announcement yesterday in the Federal Register saying the shift in defence trade policy follows credible, democratic elections in Fiji last September.

FBC News reports the Fiji Defence Minister Timoci Natuva as saying he will wait for a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry before comments on the lifting of the ban.

The U.S. had restricted its assistance to Fiji after the Frank Bainimarama-led military coup in 2006.
