Deal ends nine-day New Caledonia bank strike

A nine-day bank strike in New Caledonia has ended after a deal was reached to increase employees' wages.

The agreement provides for a 1.1 percent pay hike now, followed by a 0.4 percent increase in December.

The resolution to the conflict came after 400 people demonstrated in the centre of Noumea yesterday against what they called the pillaging by multinationals from the outside.

The strike, which shut most branches, had begun last week when the unions sought a two-percent pay rise while the French Banking Federation offered 0.2 percent.
