Fiji's Sodelpa want answers over attempt to oust MP

4:20 am on 9 June 2015

The leader of Fiji's opposition Sodelpa party, Ro Teimumu Kepa, wants to know why the government initiated a failed action to remove its newly installed MP.

Mikaere Leawere, as next on the list, took his place after the death of Sodelpa MP, Ratu Viliame Tagivetaua.

After he was unsuccessful in last year's election Mr Leawere resumed his unionist job with the Teachers' Association which the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum petitioned should disqualify him from taking up the post now.

But the High Court on Monday backed the Electoral Commission's decision to give the seat to Mr Leawere.

Ro Teimumu has welcomed the decision but says she is perplexed it happened at all.

She wants to know what the point was, since the seat would always have gone to a member of the Sodelpa Party - there would not have been a by-election.

Ro Teimumu says the case involved a lot of time, money and resources and raises more questions than it provides answers.
