An American Samoa government building closed its doors yesterday afternoon because of a bad odour from dead rats believed to be in the walls and ceiling.

Its chief compliance officer, Papalii Marion Fitisemanu, says parts of the AP Lutali Executive Office Building in Utulei will be shut down for 24 hours.

Employees say they first noticed the smell late last week and were allowed to go home early on Friday.

They say when they returned to work the smell was even worse.

Papalii says a pesticides control company have been working since the weekend to remove the dead rats.
