Hundreds of protestors interrupted the Mt Hagen launch of Papua New Guinea's National Identification programme on Wednesday.

The Post Courier reports that the protestors claimed the programme being rolled out in PNG provinces infringes on citizens' constitutional rights.

They disrupted the launch attended by numerous high-profile delegates, including National Planning and Monitoring Minister Charles Abel and Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti.

Police personnel providing security for the occasion had to fire several warning shots to disperse the protesters who had turned rowdy and opposed the speeches delivered by the delegates.
