Papua New Guinea's Modilon hospital in Madang is expected to reopen after a week's closure in protest over the kidnapping and assault of two doctors.

The newspaper, The National, reports seven of the nine men allegedly involved in the kidnapping have been arrested, while two are still on the run.

Witnesses say the doctors were having drinks at the waterfront along Coronation Drive two weeks ago when the men held them at gunpoint, covered their faces and forced them into the boot of one of the doctor's vehicles.

The provincial police commander of Madang, Sylvester Kalaut, says the suspects are former school students from Tusbab Provincial High School.

Some patients were turned away from Modilon Hospital last week, as staff closed it in protest.
