Concerns have been raised in the Cook Islands after it was reported that a large number of students under 14 years of age are sexually active.
The Ministry of Education has responded by organising a sex education training workshop for teachers, the first in 11 years.
A staff presenter, Debbie Puati, says of the high number of sexually active young students, less than half were using contraception.
Today's workshop will focus on teaching children about healthy, monogamous relationships, and the following day presenters will deal with sexual health, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Ms Puati says children are willing to learn and the topic must be brought more out in the open.
