Fiji denies playing countries off against each other

Fiji's attorney general has denied the country is trying to play foreign partners against each other through the formation of new diplomatic ties.

In a speech to the ACP-EU conference in Suva, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that since his government took power in the 2006 coup, European partners and other organisations had "abandoned Fiji".

FBC News reports Mr Sayed-Khaiyum saying that during that time, people were getting raped and houses were being robbed so the government had to look for alternative sources of funding, which was provided by China and Malaysia.

He says any notion of Fiji's foreign policy playing countries against each other is a misconception as it carries out its own assessments and forms its own relations.
