The Papua New Guinea Defence Force has launched Operation Pacific Wantok, a joint taskforce for the Pacific Games next month.

PNGDF Commander Brigadier-General Gilbert Toropo says 300 soldiers will serve as special constables to assist police in security during the games.

The Post Courier reports the special constables will be identified by the wearing of a red band on their right arm.

Commander Toropo says preparations involving the Australian and New Zealand defence forces began two years ago ahead of the games and the 2018 APEC summit.

The Pacific Wantok taskforce will include two ready reaction forces, a static presence in all venues and the availability of additional machinery such as helicopters.
