Fiji unveils 'super bean'

12:17 pm on 3 August 2015

Fiji's agriculture ministry has unveiled a new variety of mung bean with improved iron content and drought-resistance.

The agriculture minister, Inia Seruiratu, unveiled the new bean, which has been developed at the ministry's Legalega Research Station over seven years, at a Vanua Levu farm on Friday.

Mr Seruiratu says the 'Samraat' bean has been thoroughly researched in major pulse-growing areas in Fiji and has now become acclimatised to local conditions.

He says the bean contributes to Fiji's food and nutrition security, as it's drought tolerant and able to cope better in harsher conditions while still providing essential nutrients.
