An asylum seeker from Australia's detention centre on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island is facing charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, using insulting words and indecent exposure.

The newspaper, The National, says Mirwais Seyed Rohani was arrested after the incident at the detention centre last week.

The provincial police commander, Alex N'Drasal, says police were called by immigration officers after Mr Rohani allegedly attacked his roommate and damaged camp property.

He says it took officers three hours to calm him down before he was brought to the police station where he started forcing other prisoners to fight him.

Mr Rohani will appear in court in Lorengau this week.
