About 1,600 air passengers have been stranded on the Northern Marianas' main island of Saipan while a fire truck gets fixed.

The territory, which has had to deal with the impact of Typhoon Soudelor and a broken fibre optic cable in recent weeks, as of last Friday has had to restrict the size of aircraft coming into Saipan because a fire truck needs maintenance.

The Commonwealth Ports Authority says it is urgently seeking replacement parts for the airport rescue vehicle.

The Marianas' Visitor Authority says about 1,600 people have had to wait for later flights.
