The New Caledonian president Philippe Germain has called for the resignation of Anthony Lecren following the cabinet member's suspended two months' prison sentence for drunk driving.

The pro independence politician who is responsible for the environment and customary affairs was convicted on Thursday and has appealed the decision.

In April he was found drunk at the wheel while driving a government vehicle in the Noumean suburb of Mont Dore.
