Werner Jakobus Visser was among their five gold medallists, taking out the boy's discus, while Tiotliso Gift Leotlela blitzed the field in the boy's 100m in a time of 10.20.
England's Emma Hamplett won the first gold medal of the Games in the girls javelin while Fijian weightlifter Ulina Sagone won the Pacific's first gold medal of the games in the girl's 53kg division with a total lift of 136kg.
Twelve countries won a gold medal on day one, with hosts Samoa among the 21 countries to open their medal count.
