The Papua New Guinea Hunters' season is over after slumping to a 28-12 defeat against the Ipswich Jets in the Queensland Cup preliminary rugby league final.

Stargroth Amean crossed for the opening try after ten minutes to put the Hunters in front but the Jets hit back with four unanswered tries to take a commanding 22-8 lead into halftime.

Ipswich extended their advantage to 28-8 before Willie Minoga managed a consolation try on full time.

It's the second straight finals loss for the Hunters, after their 17-game unbeaten run was snapped the previous weekend.

Ipswich's victory at Kougari Oval sets up a first grand final appearance since 2008, where they will face minor premiers Townsville Blackhawks at Suncorp Stadium.
