American Samoa shipyard "not ready" for privatisation

2:11 pm on 23 September 2015

The head of American Samoa's government owned shipyard says it's not ready for privatisation.

Last year the government sought local and off-island interest in a public-private partnership to operate the shipyard.

However there was only one local response and very little interest from off-island.

Lawmakers have been pushing for the government to look at privatisation but the shipyard's acting CEO Moefa'auo William Emmsley says it needs improving in order to attract more investors.

"At this point all of our assessments have indicated that we are not yet ready for privatisation however that would be our ultimate goal."
