The mayor of Tinian in the northern Marianas says the United States' proposed live-fire millitary training will put an "economic chokehold" on the island.

Joey Patrick San Nicolas made the comment in the environmental impact statement on the American plans.

He says the plan would mean an end to economic viability, the destruction of land and resources, and a denial of the Tinian people's right to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Mr San Nicolas says it would be an economic chokehold on the island, undermining tourism and limiting traditional access to gathering and fishing sites.

The US Marines have laid out plans for four areas on Tinian, including grenade, tank, pistol, and mortar training, and restricting the airspace.

They plan to build on land they lease in Tinian's north.
