Our correspondent reports there was a poor turnout with just 10,236 voting from more than 37,000 registered voters.

Kenneth Natapei got 4,600 votes.

The independent candidate, Ishmael Kalsakau, finished second with 3,205 votes, and one of the two women candidates, Nadia Kanegai, finished 3rd with 974 votes.

The win means the opposition block in the Vanuatu Parliament now has 23 MPs in the 52 seat House.

Kenneth's father Edward Natapei, a former Vanuatu prime minister, died suddenly in July.
