Sport: Fiji Football focused on development

Fiji Football President Rajesh Patel believes the country is well positioned to capitalise on their success at age grade level.

The Fiji Under 20s impressed at the World Cup earlier this year, beating Honduras in pool play, while the Olympic Under 23 team are heading to Rio next year after Oceania Football dismissed an appeal by New Zealand over the Oly Whites' disqualification from regional qualifying.

The Federation States of Micronesia play Fiji at the Pacific Games. They lost this game 38-0.

Rajesh Patel says the future looks good, especially with an extra World Cup berth now available at Under 17 and Under 20 level for Oceania.

"We've already got our centres of development and centres of excellence operated all over Fiji - we're planning to do another 12 next year. The Under 20 experience for the players [was great and] half of them are included in the under 23 squad too. This is something that is positive for us and as we grow from here this will be the Fijian national team stars for Fiji Football".

Rajesh Patel says the Fiji Olympic team has matches lined up in Asia and Europe as part of their Rio preparations.
