Tonga says most reefs damaged

A recent survey of Tonga's waters indicates that most coral reefs are damaged or destroyed.

A senior government geologist, 'Apai Moala, told Radio Tonga that most of the damage has been caused by human activities such as illegal fishing.

He says coral reefs in Niuatoputapu, where more than 80 percent of residents rely on the ocean for their food, are the most affected.

Mr Moala is working with the Living Oceans Foundation, which is currently holding training programmes in Tongan schools about saving the country's reefs.
