Australian authorities are investigating reports that two red-stained human teeth were found in a meal served to an asylum seeker detained on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

The asylum seeker made a formal complaint after discovering the teeth in food served at lunchtime on Saturday.

Australia's immigration department says reports that human teeth were found in a meal were being thoroughly investigated.

It says the department's contract with the detention centre's service provider, Transfield, requires compliance will all relevant health and food safety regulations.
