Vanuatu's government has been given a 5 million US dollar grant to help accelerate the rebuilding of schools destroyed by Cyclone Pam in March.

The grant is provided by the Japanese government, through the Asian Development Bank, and will be used to rebuild at least five junior and secondary schools in the badly-hit Tafea province.

The regional director of the ADB's Pacific office, Andrea Iffland, says the schools will be build to achieve a safer, clean learning environment for students.

She says the projects will also include the construction of community shelters with rainwater storage, communications facilities and supplies for use in future emergencies.
