PNG woman tortured after "sorcery" death

Papua New Guinea police say a woman has been killed after allegedly practising sorcery resulting in the death of a district official.

The National newspaper reports the mother of five was was accused of causing the death of a district health officer and she was apprehended by tribesmen of the dead woman after the funeral.

The Southern Highlands police commander Superintendent Sibron Papoto says the accused woman was tortured, before being butchered and thrown in a fire.

The police chief says the Miruba tribesmen also torched houses and killed livestock belonging to the woman's relatives.

He has condemned the acts as barbaric and promised all involved would face justice.
