Three PNG policemen arrested

Three policemen in Papua New Guinea have been arrested in Port Moresby - two of them for sex-related offences.

The Post Courier quotes a senior officer, Sylvester Kalaut, as saying one officer was arrested for indecent assault and another for rape.

The third was arrested for allegedly impounding a city resident's car for no apparent reason and crashing it.

Mr Kalaut says the officers committed the crimes on the pretext of carrying standard police procedures during the New Year's police operations.

He says one officer was alleged to have arrested a woman and forcefully felt under her clothes with the excuse that she might be hiding something.

The other, he says, raped a woman who had gone to the police to report an incident.

She was raped in the interview room of the police station in the belief that she would be interviewed.

Last week, an Australian businessman, who has lived in Papua New Guinea for 37 years, said he has been robbed of 3,500 US dollars by members of the police mobile squad.
