Plagued by brutality, PNG police plan conduct committee

Papua New Guinea police are forming a new committee to deal with brutality and misconduct in the force.

Last week, police revealed that 41 officers in Port Moresby have been suspended and face 89 charges in total.

The Acting Deputy Commissioner, Jim Andrews, has encouraged regional commanders to deal with the issue firmly and says a committee will be formed soon to assist.

He says there are good processes for dealing with internal misconduct but enforcement remains an issue.

He says the new committee within the Internal Affairs Directorate will hopefully change that.

"That committee will ensure that those incidents that have been reported are not left behind, are not ignored or are not forgotten. The committee will ensure that those matters in relation to police brutality and other indiscipline that has been committed or reported have to be dealt with swiftly."

Jim Andrews says an individual approach has not worked in the past and collective decisions need to be made.
