Sport: Fiji Bati set to appoint new coach

11:49 am on 12 January 2016

Fiji National Rugby League is to advertise for a new head coach to guide the Bati through to next year's World Cup.

Former Newcastle Knights mentor Rick Stone led Fiji to the semi finals of the last World Cup and has been in the role since 2011 but indicated last year he was unlikely to continue.

Fiji NRL CEO Timoci Naleba says he's already received a number of expressions of interest.

"I would like to have the recruitment done [by the] beginning of March. There's four more people who have expressed their interest - mostly NRL coaches, Not the ones who have been competing [as a head coach] at that level but they're very credible people who have expressed their interest, and one or two locals who have not been with Rick Stone for the past World Cup but I've told them to apply formally."

Mr Naleba says they want to ensure they appoint the best person for the job.

He understands Rick Stone may also be interested in remaining in charge but says he's received nothing in writing and has yet to speak with him.
