Futuna mobile roll-out continues

The roll-out of the mobile phone network on the French Pacific island of Futuna has continued despite threats by a family to shut down a key relay point.

The territory's public broadcaster says further pylons have been added to complete the network roll-out.

However, a dispute remains unresolved over whether the key transmitter is on private or public land, with one extended family warning it will cut the site off.

When the transmitter was turned on before Christmas, Wallis and Futuna became the last French territory to get a mobile phone service.

Its launch followed 15 years of work on the project which had been resisted as opponents feared mobile phone contact could damage local customs.
