Cook Islands club champions Tupapa Maraerenga plan to stick to a winning formula for today's top of the table clash against Kiwi FC in the OFC Champions League Preliminary football tournament.

Tupapa thrashed Tonga's Veitongo FC 7-0 in the first round in Rarotonga while Samoan champions Kiwi beat Utulei Youth FC from American Samoa 6-2.

Delaney Yaqona was happy with how his side kept possession and controlled the game.

Both clubs have tasted success at the Preliminary event in the past three years and he says it's always a special encounter.

"There's lots of emotions so [I've told my boys] just to make sure that they have some passion when they get out there on the field but also to control the emotion. Traditionally they are our greatest rivals in this competition and they have a lot of experienced players in the team. I know they were a bit rusty [first up] simply because they haven't been together that long as a team but given the extra days together I'm sure they will come out with a very good gameplan. We can only control what we do and so we will just go back to the drawing board and the simple message to my boys is to do everything just a little bit smarter".

The overall Preliminary winner will qualify for the OFC Champions League in April.
